November 2009

President’s Corner!

As we enjoy the fall season, we find ourselves in the thick of things at school and at home. Although it is difficult to find time for ourselves and our own professional growth, we hope that you include as many HSLMA meetings as possible into your plans this school year.

You will not want to miss our next meeting, “Building A Strong Foundation – CAF Educational Resources” on December 12th at the Chicago Architecture Foundation (earn 2 CPDU’s). Our hostess and presenter in December will be Jean Linsner. Jean will discuss the many exciting educational resources that CAF offers high school educators and students. Details regarding this meeting are below.
While downtown at the CAF on December 12, you can view their FREE “Chicago Model City” exhibit in the Atrium Gallery, shop in their gift store or participate in one of the CAF afternoon tours (a fee is required). Information regarding these activities and more can be found at: www.**architecture**.org.
I hope you were part of the big turnout at the September 12th meeting at Hoffman Estates High School. If not, you missed a great way to start the year by seeing old friends, meeting new ones and being part of a dynamic professional program. A big THANK YOU goes to Mary Spevacek for hosting our meeting at her newly remodeled media center, to Heather Vulpone and Patricia Kozarits (with H & J Educational Resources) for sponsoring the delicious breakfast and book raffle and to Lisa Perez (Area Library Coordinator for the Chicago Public Schools Department of Libraries and Chair of the ISTE Media Specialists SIG) for sharing her enthusiasm and expertise regarding the Second Life virtual reality environment.

Heather and Patricia’s presentation of new teen books and current offers by various publishers (ABDO Publishing, Chelsea House, Facts on File and Ferguson, Greyhouse Publishing, Lerner Publishing, Marshall Cavendish Publishing and Morgan Reynolds) will help us in the coming months as we select and purchase materials for our libraries. Lisa Perez’s hands-on presentation left us in awe and wanting to learn more in becoming part of the robust community of librarians in the Second Life virtual reality.

So, please mark the December 12th meeting on your calendar in ink! I look forward to seeing you then. In the meantime, please check out the new HSLMA WIKI at http://hslma.wikispaces.com.

SAVE THE DATE – Sat., December 12 Meeting! (Earn 2 CPDU’s)
Chicago Architecture Foundation
Morse Learning Studio, 224 S. Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL.
“Building a Strong Foundation – CAF Educational Resources”
Please join us on December 12 and be amazed by all of the wonderful educational resources available to you, your colleagues and your students. The Chicago Architecture Foundation offers engaging ways for children, youth, educators, and families to explore architecture and the built environment. Placed-based learning experiences using buildings and structures as primary sources are CAF's most important offerings for youth audiences. From humble bungalows to soaring skyscrapers, CAF helps teachers create field trips to meet the needs of K-12 students. To support teacher learning, CAF offers professional development workshops that introduce strategies for exploring the built environment and directly linking learning to the Illinois Learning Standards.

Our hostess and presenter at our December meeting will be Jean Linsner. Ms. Linsner, CAF's Vice President of Youth Education, will introduce the variety of ways CAF can work with you and your students in the coming year. Since 1999, she has led a team of educators whose work includes developing two award-winning curricular programs. The Architecture Handbook: A Student Guide to Understanding Buildings (2007), teaches high school students both the fundamentals of architectural design and technical drawing. In 2002, she co-authored, Schoolyards to Skylines: Teaching with Chicago’s Amazing Architecture, a Kindergarten-Grade 8 teacher resource designed for using Chicago’s built environment to teach the core academic subjects of math, science, language arts, visual arts, and history.
Make a day of it downtown and view the CAF Chicago Model City” exhibit in the Atrium Gallery, shop in the CAF gift store (coupons might be available), participate in one of the CAF afternoon tours (a fee is required), see the holiday windows and lights or enjoy lunch or afternoon tea at a nearby restaurant. Information regarding the CAF activities, directions and more can be found at: www.**architecture**.org.
