President’s Corner!
Spring is definitely in the air! With the approach of sunnier days (we hope!) and warmer weather we have renewed energy.
Spring also brings spring break and testing! And it brings an end to the HSLMA meeting programs for the year.
But we are going out with a "bang" so you don’t want to miss the April 17th meeting at Dominican University. We have two great presenters that will leave us with that spring bounce in our step! Thom Barthelmess, Curator of the Butler Children’s Literature Center at Dominican University and President of the Association for Library Service to Children, and Sue Tindall, Educational Technologist or ‘Cybrarian’ at Trinity High School are teaming up for the “Rounding out the Year with YA Literature” program.
Thom will discuss ways the Butler Center means to share books with librarians and teachers in the community, and opportunities for those same librarians and teachers to contribute to the Butler Center’s business. This is a great opportunity for HSLMA members to hear firsthand Thom’s plans and to check out the wonderful materials and resources that are available in the Butler Center. Certainly Thom’s charm and expertise will reignite our passion for children’s literature.
Sue will be "Teaching Old Tricks to New Dogs". We’ve all heard about Web 2.0 (in fact many of us listened to Dr. Hank Thiele’s wonderful "2.0 Savvy" presentation in February) but some of the great ways to reach teens are through Library 1.0 technology. Come to the April 17th meeting and learn old school tech tips that you can use today to encourage reading and improve your lesson delivery. Sue will present a humorous look at tools that may seem ‘so last century’ but which plug seamlessly into today’s tech scene. We’ll practice in the Dominican computer lab so bring a jump drive if you want to take home some ready to use tools.
A big thank you goes to Dr. Hank Thiele and Rose Retrum for a fantastic February meeting. We walked away that day armed with new ways to reach our students using 2.0 technology. As we listened to Hank’s useful ideas and tools we soaked up the beautiful library environment that Rose has created for the Maine South High School Students. Thank you Hank and Rose for sharing your time, expertise and space with us.
So, please join us on April 17th for our "Rounding out the Year with YA Literature” program. Make sure you RSVP by Wednesday, April 14th to: mediamanjay@comcast.net.
