Please join us on December 12 and be amazed by all of the wonderful educational resources available to you, your colleagues and your students. The Chicago Architecture Foundation offers engaging ways for children, youth, educators, and families to explore architecture and the built environment. Placed-based learning experiences using buildings and structures as primary sources are CAF's most important offerings for youth audiences. From humble bungalows to soaring skyscrapers, CAF helps teachers create field trips to meet the needs of K-12 students. To support teacher learning, CAF offers professional development workshops that introduce strategies for exploring the built environment and directly linking learning to the Illinois Learning Standards.
Our hostess and presenter at our December meeting will be Jean Linsner. Ms. Linsner, CAF's Vice President of Youth Education, will introduce the variety of ways CAF can work with you and your students in the coming year. Since 1999, she has led a team of educators whose work includes developing two award-winning curricular programs. The Architecture Handbook: A Student Guide to Understanding Buildings (2007), teaches high school students both the fundamentals of architectural design and technical drawing. In 2002, she co-authored, Schoolyards to Skylines: Teaching with Chicago’s Amazing Architecture, a Kindergarten-Grade 8 teacher resource designed for using Chicago’s built environment to teach the core academic subjects of math, science, language arts, visual arts, and history.
